The Single-Bullet Theory

Read about this in a novel recently ( Michael Connelly - The Scarecrow. A wonderful murder mystery. A must read!! ). It goes as follows:

"Everybody's got one person out there. One bullet. And if you're lucky in life, you get to meet that person. And once you do, once you're shot through the heart, then there's nobody else. No matter what happens - death, divorce, infidelity, whatever - nobody else can ever come close. That's the single-bullet theory"

An odd name to put to a theory if u ask me. You would normally associate bullets with death. But this talks about life (a birth of sorts), with you finding your soul-mate and all. But then there would be no "Creativity" if you were to name it the "Soul-mate" theory now, would there? It would give away the details immediately. Contrast theory in use. Oh, I'm reminded of those Behavioural Finanace and Business Valuation classes. Those that I understood and stayed awake, of course. Which was this one class. (HAHAHA Of course not! I was more attentive than THAT!! I was awake for two classes!!)

Anyhowwww..... That particular paragraph in the book got me thinking. How is it that you manage to find the "one" to pierce that bullet into? What are the indications that make you think that he/she is the "one" for you?

Is it when you see her the first time? (What they call "Love at first sight"... is such a thing even possible?) Is it when you can't stop thinking about the person? Or is it when you wait for the constant messages/ calls/ pokes on Facebook/ weird Tweets meant only for the "one" to understand? Or is it when the lion comes into your house to eat you up? (HA! That was put just to check if you are ACTUALLY reading this!! If you are.... please... by all means... continue!!)

I personally think that it takes a lot of time to actually "love" a person. And, there is no such thing as the "one" for you. It just makes logical sense. If each person had the "one" for him/ her, then it would mean that there are equal number of men and women in this world. (Unless you count the gays and the lesbians, which would then mean that it is legal to be gay or lesbian!! That would make the permutations and combinations VERY complicated!! Just a thought...)

On a serious note though, I think that it just doesn't add up. You might like a person at first, but then you might find out later on that it was better NOT to be with him/ her. A lot depends on what people call "the gut feeling". Hence, I give a thumbs down to "The Single-Bullet Theory".

What do you think?
